Rest in Peace Jim Conaway

On May 2nd 2013, Jim Conaway was laid to rest in the Washington Crossing National Cemetery. He was surrounded by his family and friends and was escorted there by the members of both Station 6 and Station 7. Jim was given full Military Honors which included a 21 gun salute, live Bugler playing Taps, and the folding of the flag. Jim will be missed by many and remembered for who he was, a great man, husband, and father. Those that knew him will understand the first picture without comment, for those that may not have had the pleasure of knowing Jim, he devoted his life to service, in the Army and in the Fire Service. When he would come to the station, there was ALWAYS a Wawa cup of coffee in his hand. If not, there was always one person that knew it was time to make a Wawa run! There were times that Jim had "disagreements" with others in the Department, and those were handled in whatever manner that the time dictated, not always civilly but in the end, everyone pulled together and did what was best for the Department and each other. Everyone knows that when a loved one passes, the family mourns, what many people do not know is that as a Fire Fighter, we are part of another family, a much larger family, and that family mourns the loss of a past Chief, President, and Life Member. Rest in Peace Jim, you will be forever in our hearts and minds. God bless your family and help them remember the good times. The Funeral Procession: youtu.be/-wTO1yvjwYg 95%...

Live Burn Training

Have you ever wondered how Fire Fighters train for that possible house fire? Well here is the answer, they go to a controlled environment and light a fire which is highly controlled where they can act like it is the real thing and work through all the normal steps they would take when a real fire does happen. On the 27th of April the Lower Southampton Fire Department went to the Bucks County Public Safety Training Center located just outside of Croydon, PA. While they were there, they trained on everything from how to "Drop in" meaning how to hook the supply hose to the fire hydrant, "Throwing" ladders, handling the attack hose, to pumping the trucks to supply those hoses. The members of the LSFD spent 4 hours training at the training center, honing their skills on all these tasks as well as working on communication skills which are vitally important on a "Fire Ground". This is all hard work and after each scenario the Fire Fighters were checked medically and had their blood pressure taken, just like they would in a real fire situation. Every Fire Fighter got the chance to enter the burn building and feel the heat from a real fire, in a controlled environment. It is a great training opportunity, and over 20 Fire Fighters took advantage of this chance. There was a lot of work and a lot of fun during this training. In the end the Fire Fighters talked a lot about how beneficial this was and how much was learned. The skills that were honed will hopefully not be needed, but rest easier knowing that this training was completed and the Fire Fighters are better at what they do. The Department would like to thank the Training Center for their time and for the use of their facilities. ...

Vehicle Recovery from the Neshaminy Creek

At approximately 8:40 PM on Wednesday 10 April the Lower Southampton Fire Department's Water team was asked to assist in the recovery of a vehicle that had ended up in the water at the Marina in Croydon. The vehicle, which was being used to pull a boat from the water, ended up backing into the water after the driver exited the vehicle. No one was injured and the cause of this unfortunate accident is under investigation. About 10 Members of the water team drove to the scene to assist and 2 Members suited up in drysuites and snorkles to hook the recovery chain to the vehicle. The vehilce was removed from the water with no chemicals escaping, another successful recovery that results in protecting the environment. The vehicle is most likely totaled as it was running when it entered the water and was submerged for an hour or so before it was removed. In the end, no one was physically hurt by this incident....

Incident Safety Officer Training

On March 23-24 2013, six members of Lower Southampton Fire Dept. #6 attended the Incident Safety Officer class offered at the Public Safety Training Center in Doylestown. This course is more than an awareness overview and addresses the information needed and the necessary actions required for incident specific application. The role of the responding safety officer and his position on the fire ground in relationship with the on scene incident command, and their mutual need for clear, direct and immediate communication were stressed as a top priority. It was also demonstrated through various scene specific analysis that a dedicated safety officer has his hands full doing just that and should not be anxious to take on any other assignments. Staying focused on the complete safety of his fellow fire fighters should remain his primary focus through the many facets that Incident Safety Officer must continually monitor on the scene. Footnote : the following week two more LS6FD members also participated in this instruction as well as Health and Safety Officer class...

Dollar Drop

The members of the Lower Southampton Fire Department would like to thank everyone for their generosity at our Dollar Drop on Saturday 30 March. Those that live in the area that we call our "local" which is that area we are tasked with protecting may have received the Fund Drive Letter asking for donations as well. You may ask why we are looking for donations in these manners, the answer is simple. Since the late 80s we have not asked for a tax hike for the fire tax. The reason for this is the generosity of people like you. As an all volunteer Fire Department we rely on the money that we receive from the fire tax to continue our operations. Every time we respond to a call, every day we conduct training, each month when the bills come in for the Fire Department, if costs more and more every year. The basic costs of fuel alone have increased greatly over the past 20 years. And we are able to continue carrying on operations because of the fund drives that we conduct, all without asking for higher taxes. For that we say THANK YOU! If you see us on the street, or driving our trucks to or from an emergency call, and have thought, "That is something I might want to do". You can come out and join us on a Monday or Thursday night to check it out. You can find an application to the Fire Department under the download tabs of this web site. We accept applications just about every Monday and Thursday between 7 PM and 9 PM. We look forward to seeing you out there. ...

Swift Water Training

Five members of the Lower Southampton Fire Department braved the cold on Sunday 17 March 2013 to train in swift water exercises. The members that attended were Deputy Chief Dave Whitaker, Assistant Chief Stephen Brookes, LT 6-2 Brant Warner, Safety Officer Steven Enigson, and Photographer for the day Virginia Gindele. Some of the drills that they practiced were self rescue, used when a rescuer falls into the swift moving water, rescue by the use of a throw bag, this is used when a person is in the water and a rescuer on the shore throws a rope out to the "victim" in the water, the use of a "Go" where the rescuer is connected to a rope attended by other members on the shore and swims out to the "victim" and assists in pulling the "victim" to shore, this is used if the victim is not able to grab a rope for any reason. Lastly they practiced catching and hooking into a rope that spanned the waterway. In the end everyone had a great time, even with water temperatures hovering in the low 30s! All in the name of training to be ready in case of an emergency. Just look at the water flowing! ...

On Saturday 23 February 2013 the Lower Southampton Fire Department Family got together for our 82nd Annual Banquet. We would like to thank the members of Station 73 who came down to cover for us so our Local was still safe while we partook in the festivities. We would also like to thank the quests from around the area that attended. In true Station 6 fashion, we enjoyed our time together and really had a great time. During the banquet we shared a social hour before sharing our meal, after that, the Officers honored the Life Members, one of them with over 50 years of service to the Lower Southampton Fire Department, recognized the 29 Members that achieved the distinction of making the Century club meaning that they responded to more than 100 calls for the year, an AMAZING statistic! Then the President's award which went to Deputy Chief Dave Whitaker, the Chief's award which went to Fire Police Captain Joseph Nean, and the Fire Fighter of the year award which went to Lieutenant 6-2 Brant Warner. After the awards were handed out, everyone spent a couple of hours dancing and just having a great time. At the end of the evening, everyone parted ways thankful of the time that we all got to spend together. ...
