Helping the community become more "fire safe" is a major focus of the Lower Southampton
Fire Department. We have provided for you tips and pointers on how you can make
yourself and your family more fire safe.
- Install a smoke detector in every room of your house. When installing the smoke
detector, it is best to place the detector in the center of the ceiling. Proper
placement will help the smoke detector better perform its job.
- Make an escape plan with your family. Making and practicing a fire escape plan will
help you and your family respond quicker in the event of an emergency. When creating
a fire escape plan, make sure to have a second emergency exit in case the first one
is blocked.
- Do Not Leave Matches Or Lighters Near Young Children. It is important that you keep
all matches and lighters out of the reach of young children.
- Do Not Block Any Doorways. In the event of a fire, a blocked doorway may be fatal
to those trying to escape. If you have any boxes, furniture or other items blocking
a doorway of your home, it is best to move them to another spot.
- Monitor The Stove When Cooking. When cooking in the kitchen, it is important to
never leave the stove or over unattended. If something where to catch fire, you
could put it out quicker than if you walked away and didn't know something was on
fire.
- Get A Fire Extinguisher. Homes with fire extinguishers have a better chance of preventing
a large fire than those without. If you have a fire extinguisher already, or are
thinking of buying one, make sure that every family member knows where it is and
how to operate it.
- Put Out Your Cigarette. When you have finished smoking your cigarette it is important
that you properly extinguish it. The proper extinguishment of cigarettes will help
prevent potentially fatal fires.
